biography
David Smoyer was born in Philadelphia and grew up in the small, mid-Atlantic state of Delaware. The natural world was always a source of fascination, beauty, and inspiration. It was the occasional family vacation to the mountains in the west, however, that began to train his photographic eye to the spectacle of the earth's workings.

After spending a year in the Sierra Nevada mountains and the surrounding high desert country of California and Nevada, David returned to the University of Delaware to complete a BS degree in Chemical Engineering. But his experience in the Sierras crystallized his true passion: traveling in and photographing wild, spectacular places. This passion eventually led him back to the west coast, and he soon moved to the San Francisco Bay area to be closer to wilderness and opportunities for outdoor adventure.

David's journeys have led him to travel extensively throughout the remote areas of the Great American West, as well as much of western Canada. His overseas travels include England, Cyprus, and southeastern Africa to photograph safari game and a total solar eclipse.

The flow of water over rock at dawn, the day's last, warm light on a ridge line, the explosive palette of fall foliage.it is this dynamic interplay of time, light, and place that moves and shapes David's images.
